A NEW TENDENCY: COMMUNITY SOLAR
"Community Solar" has become a popular form of electricity consumption due to its accessibility. Unlike traditional solar panel installations that must be located on an open property or rooftop space, community solar is designed for large-scale use among multiple tenants.
Traditionally, solar energy installation favored real estate owners and investors, leaving renters and low-income households without access to the benefits of solar. However, "Community Solar" is reshaping the landscape, by offering more customers the opportunity to adopt and benefit from solar energy.
The rise of shared solar self-consumption or hybrid through this new tendency: "Community Solar", is a model that allows multiple people, businesses, or organizations to harness solar energy without needing individual panel installations. It is typically offered through subscription-based programs, expanding access to a broader range of customers, including renters or those without adequate shelter. Beyond the environmental benefits received, participants generally obtain savings in energy costs, which currently are around 10% in the USA.
22 states in the USA have passed laws on independent community solar projects. Despite the challenges that states like Massachusetts and Maine faced in 2022, recent favorable policies in Maryland, New Jersey, and California have spurred growth. Projections in the USA indicate an average annual increase of 8% with an estimated capacity of 14 gigawatts by 2028 and "Community Solar" is forecast to power 5 million homes by 2025, making clean, affordable electricity more accessible for all.
In 2024, in Spain and Italy, "energy communities", "solar communities" and collective self-consumption will begin to take off. This after the utilities had created many obstacles, greatly delaying network connections and other problems. The reason? Their large electrification plants were doing the work and were installing many energy communities, solar communities, and collective self-consumption. And things were going well there.
